Pantanal – Land of the Jaguar The Pantanal is one of the most extraordinary wildlife destinations on Earth and home to the largest concentration of Jaguars anywhere in the world. Stretching across vast areas of Brazil, Bolivia and Paraguay, it is the world’s largest tropical wetland and one of the most biodiverse ecosystems in South America. For wildlife photographers, conservationists and nature enthusiasts alike, the Pantanal represents a rare opportunity to witness wildlife at a scale and proximity that has become increasingly rare elsewhere. From the winding river systems to the seasonally flooded grasslands, every part of this landscape is alive with remarkable species and fascinating wildlife encounters. I have visited the Pantanal on multiple occasions and will return again in 2026 to continue documenting its wildlife and supporting conservation efforts in the region. Alongside leading wildlife photography workshops, I will be working closely with Jaguars ID on a voluntary basis. Their research and conservation work focuses on monitoring wild Jaguars, studying their movements and behavior, and helping protect one of the most important Jaguar populations on the planet. The Pantanal is considered the global stronghold of the Jaguar. Nowhere else are sightings of these elusive big cats as consistent and reliable as they are along the rivers of northern Pantanal. While Jaguars remain difficult to observe across much of their range, the unique landscape of the Pantanal provides an extraordinary opportunity to study and photograph them in the wild. Despite their success in this region, Jaguars continue to face significant challenges. Habitat loss, increasing agricultural expansion, wildfires, illegal hunting and human-wildlife conflict threaten populations throughout South America. Conservation organizations, researchers and local communities play a crucial role in ensuring that these animals continue to thrive in the future. The Pantanal’s importance extends far beyond Jaguars alone. The region supports an astonishing diversity of wildlife, including Giant Otters, South American Tapirs, Capybaras, Giant Anteaters, Marsh Deer and hundreds of bird species. Among the most iconic birds are the vibrant Hyacinth Macaws, the largest flying parrots on Earth, the unmistakable Toco Toucans, the impressive Jabiru Stork and the powerful Ringed Kingfisher. Together with countless reptiles, mammals and aquatic species, they form one of the richest wildlife communities found anywhere in the Americas. For photographers, the Pantanal offers endless opportunities to document natural behavior. Jaguars patrolling riverbanks, Giant Otters raising their young, Hyacinth Macaws nesting in ancient trees and countless predator-prey interactions create a constantly changing and dynamic environment that rewards patience and dedication. Beyond photography, this project is deeply connected to conservation. Through collaboration with Jaguars ID, educational workshops and visual storytelling, the goal is not only to showcase the beauty of the Pantanal but also to support the ongoing efforts that help protect its wildlife and habitats for future generations. The Pantanal serves as a reminder that healthy ecosystems are essential for both wildlife and people. Protecting these landscapes means protecting countless species, preserving biodiversity and ensuring that future generations can continue to experience one of the world’s greatest natural treasures. Germany Alök
Exploring Alpine Ecosystems | Germany My passion for wildlife, conservation and environmental protection was shaped long before I became a professional wildlife photographer. During my studies in Environmental Protection and Engineering at TH Bingen University of Applied Sciences, I participated in an extensive field research project focused on the analysis and assessment of alpine ecosystems in southern Germany. The objective of the expedition was to study different ecosystem types and gain a deeper understanding of the complex relationships between geology, hydrology, flora and fauna. Under the guidance of Prof. Dr. Michael Rademacher, an expert in limnology, ecology and zoology, we spent several days conducting fieldwork across a variety of natural habitats. One of the most fascinating aspects of the region is the diversity of ecosystems that exist within a relatively small geographical area. As altitude increases, environmental conditions change significantly, creating a mosaic of habitats that includes forests, rivers, lakes, wetlands, mountain meadows and alpine environments. Each of these habitats supports its own communities of plants and animals and contributes to the ecological complexity of the landscape. Throughout the project, we mapped selected study areas and analyzed vegetation, soil composition and habitat structures. These investigations provided valuable insights into how environmental conditions influence biodiversity and ecosystem development over time. Particular attention was given to wetland and marsh ecosystems. These habitats are among the most valuable ecosystems in Central Europe and play an important role in water retention, water purification, carbon storage and biodiversity conservation. Marshes often require hundreds or even thousands of years to develop naturally and provide critical habitat for a wide range of specialized species. To better understand these environments, we spent many hours hiking through wetlands and surrounding habitats while documenting species and ecological structures. During the fieldwork, we encountered a remarkable variety of wildlife, including birds of prey, dragonflies, amphibians and reptiles. These species are important indicators of ecosystem health and can reveal valuable information about the condition and stability of their habitats. Dragonflies, for example, are highly sensitive to changes in water quality and habitat conditions, making them excellent indicators of healthy freshwater ecosystems. Birds of prey occupy important positions within food webs, while reptiles and amphibians often depend on very specific environmental conditions and therefore provide valuable insights into habitat quality. Beyond the scientific data collected, the project offered invaluable practical experience. Observing ecosystems directly in the field provides perspectives that cannot be fully gained through textbooks or classroom learning alone. Understanding how landscapes function, how species interact and how environmental factors influence biodiversity remains one of the most effective ways to develop a deeper appreciation for nature and conservation. The alpine regions of Germany are home to a fascinating variety of habitats and species. Their combination of mountains, forests, rivers, lakes and wetlands demonstrates how interconnected natural systems are and how important it is to preserve these environments for future generations. This field project not only expanded my scientific understanding of ecology but also strengthened my connection to conservation and environmental stewardship. The knowledge and experiences gained during this expedition continue to influence my work today, shaping how I document wildlife and communicate the importance of protecting natural ecosystems. Spain/Lynxes
The Return of the Iberian Lynx – Spain Over the course of several weeks, I travelled through the Spanish wilderness to document one of Europe’s greatest conservation success stories: the Iberian Lynx (Lynx pardinus). Once considered the most endangered wild cat on Earth, this elusive predator stood on the very edge of extinction. Today, it has become a symbol of hope and proof that dedicated conservation efforts can reverse even the most dramatic population declines. The Iberian Lynx is one of the rarest feline species in the world and can only be found on the Iberian Peninsula. Photographing these animals is an extraordinary challenge. They move silently through dense Mediterranean scrubland, are highly cautious, and often reveal themselves only for a few fleeting moments. Every encounter feels earned and serves as a powerful reminder of the importance of protecting our natural world. Only a few decades ago, the future of the species looked bleak. Habitat destruction, fragmentation of natural landscapes, illegal killing and a severe decline in rabbit populations – the lynx’s primary prey – pushed the species towards extinction. By the early 2000s, fewer than 100 individuals remained in the wild, confined to just a handful of isolated populations in southern Spain. What followed became one of the most remarkable wildlife recovery programs ever implemented in Europe. Conservation organizations, scientists, governments and local communities worked together to restore habitat, increase rabbit populations, establish captive breeding programs and reconnect fragmented landscapes. Wildlife crossings, habitat restoration projects and continuous monitoring have all played a crucial role in the species’ recovery. Today, the Iberian Lynx population has grown to more than 2,000 individuals across Spain and Portugal. The species has become a global conservation success story and demonstrates that wildlife recovery is possible when long-term protection, scientific research and public support come together. Despite this incredible progress, challenges remain. Road mortality, habitat fragmentation, climate change and fluctuations in prey populations continue to threaten the species. Continued conservation efforts are essential to ensure that future generations will still have the opportunity to witness these extraordinary cats in the wild. For me, spending weeks in the field observing and photographing Iberian Lynx was about much more than capturing images. It was an opportunity to document a rare success story in wildlife conservation and to share the importance of protecting ecosystems before species reach the point of no return. Uganda
Uganda is widely regarded as one of Africa’s most biodiverse countries and offers an extraordinary variety of wildlife and habitats within a relatively small area. During my three weeks in Uganda, I explored tropical rainforests, wetlands, savannas, and mountain ecosystems, each supporting an incredible range of species. For bird photographers, Uganda is truly exceptional. With more than 1,090 recorded bird species, the country hosts significantly more bird species than can be found across the whole of Europe. From colorful kingfishers and bee-eaters to massive storks, eagles, and herons, Uganda offers world-class opportunities for bird photography. One of the country’s greatest conservation success stories is the protection of the endangered Mountain Gorilla. Found in the mist-covered forests of the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park, these remarkable primates are protected through strict conservation measures, anti-poaching efforts, scientific monitoring, and carefully regulated tourism. Visitor numbers are limited, and permit fees directly contribute to conservation programs, ranger patrols, community projects, and habitat protection. Today, mountain gorillas are one of the few great ape populations whose numbers are increasing, demonstrating the positive impact that well-managed conservation can achieve. Uganda is also one of the best places in Africa to observe wild Chimpanzees. Encountering our closest living relatives in their natural habitat is a truly unforgettable experience and provides fascinating insights into their complex social behavior. Beyond the primates, Uganda offers an incredible diversity of wildlife. The legendary Shoebill is among the most sought-after birds on the continent and can be found in the country’s extensive wetlands. Other highlights include the Goliath Heron, the largest heron species in the world, and the constantly active Pied Kingfisher, famous for its ability to hover above the water before diving for fish. The country’s savannas are home to African Savannah Elephants, Rothschild’s Giraffes, buffalo, lions, leopards, hippos, crocodiles, numerous antelope species, and countless bird species. The combination of rainforest, wetland, mountain, and savanna ecosystems creates an exceptional level of biodiversity rarely found elsewhere. For photographers interested in experiencing Uganda firsthand, on-location wildlife photography workshops and guided photographic expeditions can be arranged upon request. The focus is always on ethical wildlife observation, photography, and gaining a deeper understanding of the conservation efforts that help protect these extraordinary species and ecosystems for future generations.
Colombia
Colombia — The World’s Most Bird-Rich Country Colombia holds a record that no other country on Earth can claim: with over 1,900 recorded bird species, it is the most avian-diverse nation in the world. That number accounts for roughly 20 percent of all bird species known to science, packed into a country that spans tropical lowlands, Andean cloud forests, Pacific coastlines, and Amazon basin. For a photographer, it is almost overwhelming. I spent one and a half weeks exploring Colombia’s forests and river edges, focusing primarily on its extraordinary diversity of songbirds and hummingbirds. Colombia is home to well over 160 hummingbird species, more than anywhere else on the planet, ranging from tiny sheartails to large, slow-moving hermits. Each habitat holds its own community of species, and moving between elevations can feel like moving between entirely different worlds. One of the most memorable encounters was with the Blue-crowned Motmot (Momotus momota), a bird that rewards patience. Motmots are medium-sized, remarkably calm birds that sit still for long periods in the forest interior, their distinctive racket-tipped tail feathers swaying slowly from side to side. Watching one in the filtered light of a Colombian forest is one of those quiet, unhurried wildlife moments that stays with you. Colombia’s biodiversity exists under significant pressure. Despite a peace agreement in 2016 that ended decades of armed conflict, deforestation has accelerated in former conflict zones as land became accessible to agriculture and cattle farming. Colombia loses an estimated 170,000 hectares of forest per year, much of it in areas that were previously protected by the presence of armed groups. The species that depend on those forests have no such protection. Conservation in Colombia is not a slow, abstract challenge. It is urgent.
Panama Harpy Eagle
Panama — In Search of the Harpy Panama is one of the most biodiverse countries on the planet, a narrow land bridge between two continents that acts as a funnel for life. With over 1,000 recorded bird species, it has one of the highest avian diversities per square kilometre in the world. During ten days in the rainforest I encountered an overwhelming variety of species: hummingbirds, toucans, ospreys, kingfishers, and countless songbirds filling the canopy with sound at every hour of the day. But there was one reason I had come. The Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja) is the largest and most powerful eagle in the Americas. Females can reach a body length of up to 107 cm, a wingspan of nearly 220 cm, and a weight of up to 9 kg. Their talons alone measure up to 13 cm, comparable in size to the claws of a grizzly bear. Panama is one of the last strongholds where a patient photographer still has a realistic chance of finding one. We located a female perched almost 25 metres up in the crown of an emergent tree. For ten hours we waited. She barely moved. And yet just being in her presence felt significant. These moments do not always produce the perfect shot. Sometimes they produce something better: the memory of stillness, height, and wildness. The Harpy Eagle carries deep cultural meaning far beyond photography. The national bird of Panama, it was revered by the Aztecs as a symbol of power and the warrior spirit. The Maya associated it with the sky realm and divine authority. For the indigenous peoples of Panama, including the Emberá and the Guna, it is a sacred animal, a bridge between the human world and the forest. Seeing one, even briefly, feels like a rare privilege. A reminder of what we stand to lose.
Costa Rica
Costa Rica — A Country Built on Biodiversity Costa Rica covers just 0.03 percent of the Earth’s land surface. Yet it is home to nearly 6 percent of all known species on the planet. With over 940 recorded bird species, 232 mammal species, 225 reptile species, and 186 amphibian species, it is arguably the most biologically dense country in the world relative to its size. Nowhere else on Earth packs this much life into this little space. I have visited Costa Rica three times, spending several months in total exploring its rainforests, river systems, and wetlands. Each visit was driven in part by the same goal: finding the Harpy Eagle (Harpia harpyja), the largest raptor in the Americas. Despite extensive searching across some of the most promising habitats in the country, the Harpy remained elusive. Costa Rica humbles you that way. But what I found instead made every hour worthwhile. Along the rivers and forest edges I encountered four species of kingfisher, each occupying its own ecological niche with remarkable precision. The Ringed Kingfisher (Megaceryle torquata), the largest of the four, patrols wide open waterways. The Amazon Kingfisher (Chloroceryle amazona) favours slower rivers and oxbow lakes. The Green Kingfisher (Chloroceryle americana) works the shaded stream margins, and the American Pygmy Kingfisher (Chloroceryle aenea) is so small and fast it takes patience and luck to find at all. The toucans of Costa Rica are equally extraordinary. The Keel-billed Toucan (Ramphastos sulfuratus), with its improbably colourful bill, is one of the most recognisable birds in the tropics. The Yellow-throated Toucan (Ramphastos ambiguus) commands the upper canopy with its deep resonant calls. And the Emerald Toucanet (Aulacorhynchus prasinus), smaller and quieter than its relatives, glows an almost metallic green in the forest light. Three visits. Several months. And still Costa Rica has not shown me everything. That, perhaps, is the point.
