Bolivia is well known for its wildness and huge Amazonian rainforest. Therefore it has been always very interesting for me to start a longterm project there. So I decided to spent there 7 weeks working in a sanctuary at the madidi national reserve and do many wildlife trips there beside my time in the sanctuary. To my work there i have a dedicated project called “ONCA” which is the animal rescue center I am referring to. The biodiversity in Bolivia is compared to Ecuador also very high but different. Instead of coastal areas you have much higher altitudes and the Salar Uyuni which is ist biggest saltflat on our planet. Much more dense amazonian jungle and huge rivers. Definitely worth a trip. But unfortunately i need to mention that the criminality there is really a risk and especially when you carry expensive gear. Also La Paz is a hotspot for thieves, kidnapping and drug criminality. On the other side in jungle you have plenty of viruses and bacterias which can affect our health fast and get serious damage. With that said still Bolivia is one of my absolute recommendations which definitely needs a good preparation in terms of planning, vaccines and the right gear to make it as safe as possible.

Galapagos
Galapagos is especially due the historic background a very interesting point when it comes to evolution. So it was one of Darwins most important experiences referring to his evolution theory. The main reasons for that is that the Galapagos islands have never been connected to any continent and therefore the flora and fauna is very unique. Many reptiles like iguanas, coastal birds and one of the most diverse marine ecosystems our planet does retain. The location and history of these islands fundemental why so many endepic species can be found there and some of them are even named after Darwin – like the Darwin Finch. Galapagos is seperated into 21 islands and most of them are uninhabitated. I visited Santa Cruz, Isla Isabella and San Cristobal for 15 days in total. This trip will be continued in 2024 for another month and the focus will be on underwater wildlife filmmaking and photography. So my filmcrew and me will be diving most of the time around “Kicker Rock” San Cristobal to capture sea lions, all variety of sharks, turtles and fishes. We aim and hope also for dolphins and orcas which are very hard to capture.
Bali Project
Bali is a the best example for a love hate relationship. On the one side the jungles, waterfalls and stunning sunsets are overwhelming. On the other side the plastic waste is incredible high and the lack of knowledge about this topic leads to very polluted coasts. Birds and especially marine life suffers a lot through this terrible amount of plastic waste in the beautiful sea. Plastic bottles, packages and recently also countless covid masks get either blown from the land to the sea or especially in rain season the huge amount of water flush the waste into the sea. Its common in Bali that after huge rainfalls its not recommended to go in the water because the amount of bacteria which are flushed from the land is too high which often causes ear infections. Of course this kind of pollution does create the effect of bioaccumulation. Bioaccumulation describes the enrichment of pollutants within the food chain, for example starting with algae which enriches pollutants out of the water while growing. These algae will be eaten by small fishes where the amount of pollutants increase and these fish get eaten by larger animals in turn and the process repeats again. The pollutant concentration can be after a while 100.000x stronger then it was in the water before. For long term i am planning to go more frequently to Bali and support coastal cleanups and startups which stand for sustainability. Also a main goal is to spread the awareness of recycling more plastic and to reuse it properly.
South Africa
For the topic of my bachelor thesis ” the impact of relocating leopards and cheetahs focused on behavior, social interaction and mental health” I decided to plan a journey to South Africa for 100 days. I worked together with a few sanctuaries and also visited countless wildlife reserves. Especially monitoring their meals, active time/day, communication with their pride are huge indicators. Although these animals look very tough and some of them are also classified as apex predators they can have a very sensitive psyche which needs to be well cared of. Relocating animals needs to be well weigh up because its very huge stress the animals suffer by the transport itself and the days/weeks they need to adapt to the new habitat. But of course in many situations this is not avoidable and needs to be done. Good preparation, a solid team and a good vet is the key to success here. While observing them I was able to capture a huge variety of animals in their natural habitat like birds of prey, caracals, dolphins, penguins, servals and countless insects. One of the most memorable moments was this scenery – watching a beautiful female cheetah while she was observing her environment covered in the lights of a purple sunset. Their incredible good eyes can spot their prey from far distances and combined with their ability to run up to 125km/h makes them very good predators.
